Brazilian Volunteer Braves Shelling To Rescue Wounded Ukrainian Soldier

This short but poignant clip is shot from the perspective of a Brazilian volunteer in Ukraine’s International Legion. Despite the trench and dugout being shelled, he runs toward the explosions to help evacuate a severely wounded comrade.

There is not a lot of information out there for context, but the action speaks for itself. The Brazilian, who is a volunteer and doesn’t have to be there at all, volunteers again to brave the smoke and whatever horror might await on the other side. He only takes a moment to steady himself.

Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?

Here am I. Send me.

I often tell my Stop The Bleed/TCCC students that it’s all right to decide beforehand that you can’t deal with trauma. I won’t fault anyone who knows their limits and opts for the door. And it’s also all right to decide, after the fact, that it was too much. The work we do isn’t for everyone, and no one will ask that of you again. But what will not suffice, what must not be allowed, is to fail in the moment when someone needs you. This soldier knew what was needed and knew he could help.
