Chechen Rebels In Street Battles In Grozny (1996)

Footage of the Battle of Grozny, also known as Operation Jihad and Operation Zero Option, filmed in August of 1996 shows Chechen separatist militants fighting against Russian federal forces.

In the months leading up to the battle, the Russian military had spun up massive offensives against the Islamist separatists in the mountains and rural areas. Unknown to them, the Chechen militants were infiltrating thousands of fighters into the city of Grozny, and in a surprise raid, rapidly captured the city.

The ensuing battle was fierce. Approximately 500 Russian troops were killed with an additional 1500 wounded. Thousands of the Chechen federal soldiers and policemen who had initially supported the Russian government switched sides and joined the separatists.

Several reinforcements of Russian infantry troops attempted to break into the city to assist their trapped fellow soldier, but jihadist ambushes inflicted mass casualties and destroyed several vehicles. Russia changed tactics, surrounded the city, and incessantly bombed it for weeks. Eventually a cease-fire was signed.
