The region is rife with violent Islamist groups that are fighting against government troops and rival insurgent factions. Hundreds of thousands of people have died in the fighting in the last decade, many of them civilians. The two main jihadist groups in the area are Boko Haram, an al Qaeda affiliate, and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
