On June 20, 2021 at approximately 12:40 a.m., a Phoenix Police Officer and Sergeant were working uniformed off duty at a bar near 96th Avenue and Camelback Road when they were notified by a patron that an ex-boyfriend was possibly following her from another bar in the area.
Later in the evening, while in the parking lot, the officers saw the ex-boyfriend, identified as 37-year-old Jesse Villasaez, inside a fenced patio area of the bar arguing with the female. The officers, in consultation with the staff, asked Villasaez to leave and walked him to the parking lot.
Villasaez stayed in the parking lot for a short time, and the officers again asked him to leave. He then began to drive away, but then turned to drive behind the bar.
The officers walked to the rear of the building and observed the pickup driving towards their location. As the pickup continued, the suspect fired several rounds from a firearm in the direction of where the officers were standing. The officers responded to the threat, discharging their firearms at the male as he continued to drive eastbound. After passing the officers, the pickup drove a short distance, fired additional rounds and then fled the scene.
Officers conducted follow-up on Villasaez known address and were able to take him into custody, unharmed, as he was getting out of a vehicle belonging to a family member. The shooting was captured on bar surveillance as well as body worn camera. Villasaez was transported to Police Headquarters and will be booked on several charges related to the shooting. There were no injuries to officers or other community members.
