Funker530's own Ronnie Adkins and Will Killmore observe the North Carolina National Guard clearing debris in Old Fort, North Carolina. The aftermath of Helene seems to suggest that Mother Nature, if not some higher power, loves irony: newer homes and buildings across the canal have been ravaged, whereas a museum cabin harkening back to the town's founding lies untouched. Catawba Vale was formally founded in 1872, changing its name to "Old Fort" the following year. However, this locality has roots going back a hundred years prior, when it was heralded as the most Westward point in the colonies. Old Fort was home to just over 800 people according to 2020 census data, and the town relies heavily on tourism as the "Gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains." It remains to be foreseen how the town, and specifically the residents, will recover from the storm as many homeowners did not have flood insurance, with little reason to expect to need it.
