(GoPro) Marine Machine Gunner Engages Russians with HK MG5

GoPro video released by the Ukrainian GUR shows former Marine Collin Lee engaging a Russian assault force with an HK MG5 medium machine gun in November of 2023. The video was filmed near Kupiansk, and if you listen closely to the audio behind the music you can hear Lee's gun firing in concert with a second machine gun to suppress the assaulting force.

The technique being utilized in this video is talking guns. Machine guns are generally best utilized when they are employed in a pair. This allows the gunners to cover a larger area with their weapon systems, and to use the talking guns technique to keep a higher rate of fire for a longer period of time.

When effectively utilized, talking guns can keep a near constant stream of gunfire going down range that a single machine gun cannot accomplish by itself. If one gun has a barrel that's overheating and needs to be changed or a malfunction that brings the gun down for a short period of time, a single gun can pick up the rate of fire to keep up suppression. With both guns operating in concert like this, they can conserve ammunition while keeping a constant state of audible suppression going down range against the enemy that discourages them from making any movement through open terrain.

According to the GUR, Collin Lee was killed during combat operations in Ukraine. From this video alone however, we can determine that he was a skilled infantryman with a strong understanding of the basic core principles of machine guns and machine gun gunnery.
