Members of a Ukrainian mortar team providing indirect fire support utilize an improvised method of top cover to keep their position concealed from overhead observation.
This is likely only a temporary solution to the problem of overhead observation for the Ukrainian mortar team. Regardless, if something seems stupid and it works, then it's not stupid. The problem of aerial observation from small commercial drones is well known in that battlespace right now, so this is a solid solution that will theoretically allow the Ukrainians to stay in place providing fire support for a longer period of time.
This is not however a solid solution for counter-battery fire systems that electronically detect the distance and direction of incoming indirect fire systems. All this does is protect the Ukrainians from overhead observation.
