The way this Iron Man ammo backpack works is the feed chute attaches to your extra rounds. This military technology has the purpose is to remove the need for an assistant gunner on the battlefield. AG’s traditionally have to deal with carrying some of the ammunition and helping their designated gunner with reloading while on patrol. So this could be used with either the M249 or M240 potentially freeing up as many as 8 separate soldiers per platoon from having to assist gunners.

The system was invented in 2011 when three soldiers from the Iowa Army National Guard submitted their idea for an ammo backpack concept. These soldiers were dealing with a problem where they didn’t have enough soldiers in their small team to carry the ammo. That’s when they thought of Jesse Ventura's ammo backpack in the movie predator. I hope those soldiers got a nice payout for helping to develop this idea and not just another AAM pinned on their chest and a handshake from some representatives in Washington DC.
That original soldier rigged up ammo can version of a prototype has since been retooled by the US army's Natick soldier research center. If you want to go digging you can find a whole bunch of arguments on the internet about whether they stole the idea from another company that was already doing something similar at the time. I’m not going into that.
