Classic footage out of the war in Afghanistan, Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), shows a pair of OH-58 Kiowa helicopter pilots taking turns lighting up a two Taliban militants attempting to flee on a single motorcycle.
The initial bursts of fire are mere warning shots to give the enemy fighters a final chance to surrender, to which they defer. After that, the Kiowa crews go in for the kill.
Although initially developed for a scout and reconnaissance role, the Kiowa proved itself to be a formidable close air support attack aircraft, seeing extensive combat from the Vietnam War all the way through Iraq and Afghanistan. The final US Army Kiowa aircraft were retired from service in 2020.
