Kyiv Post Claims Ukrainian Clandestine Operations In Syria

This footage, provided by the Kyiv Post, is a compilation of clips which show the operations of Ukraine’s Directorate of Intelligence (Ukrainian abbreviation: HUR) troops in Syria. These appear to include small arms and IED/mine attacks, and are alleged to have occurred in March of 2024.

There has been an increasing amount of media attention and dissemination of footage around HUR units as of late. The HUR “Timur” group has been known to operate in Sudan to counter the Russian Wagner presence there, and a similar group, designated “Terror” has been involved in the defense of Chasiv Yar.

In concept, HUR units are much like the CIA’s Special Activities Division or the Defense Clandestine Service. These units, answering to their respective intelligence agencies, are comparatively rarely discussed as compared to other Special Forces-type units. They deliver trauma like scalpels in the dark as opposed to hatchets. That makes the open-ness with which Ukraine discloses HUR activities, even a few months late, seem perhaps counter-intuitive. However, the propaganda and morale value in showing the world, and in particular Russia, that Ukraine’s operators have some truly surprising reach given the war on their doorstep, can not be understated. “Anytime Anywhere” is the byword of many a military unit, but HUR seems intent to prove they mean it, making life difficult for Wagner, and by extension, Russia, anywhere they set up shop.
