A new first-person point-of-view angle has emerged of the incident we reported yesterday in which a tank engages Ukrainian troops at close range, reportedly killing at least seven and injuring three.
The exact circumstances are still not clear. Our analysis suggested the Ukrainian troops complacently mistook approaching Russian tanks for friendlies, resulting in the deadly incident. Other online discussions have considered the incident as an instance of fratricide or "friendly fire."
Other online sources have identified the targeted unit as members of a volunteer battalion that regularly uploaded videos to social media. Moments before the shot, they can be heard making jokes that the tank might shoot them, according to translations. An additional translation suggested they may have been searching the downed Russian BMP for war trophies so they can claim they killed a DPR separatist, which further suggests this happened in far eastern Ukraine, possibly the Donetsk region of Donbass.
