New aerial footage released by the Albuquerque Police Department shows the events leading up to an officer involved shooting, that left one suspect in critical condition after sustaining a head wound from officer gun fire.
On August 20th, 2021, officers from the Albuquerque Police Department were dispatched around 3 p.m., looking to arrest a male suspect, identified as 26-year-old David Martinez, on an outstanding felony warrant for parole violation. In addition to his parole violation, Martinez was a person of interest in a July 2021 homicide case.
That afternoon, officers surrounded Martinez's residence located on Arno St SE in patrol vehicle and on foot. As officers approached Martinez, who at the time was in a car; he responded by speeding through a driveway and crashing through two fences. With his vehicle disabled, Martinez exited his vehicle, armed with a long rifle and began fleeing the area on foot. As he jumped over multiple fences, Martinez ultimately led officers to Broadway Boulevard, where he attempted to enter a bystanders vehicle.
As Martinez raised his rifle and pointed it at the bystander, two pursuing officer fired shots, striking Martinez in the head and neutralizing him. In order to protect the bystanders, officers were forced to use lethal force against Martinez to ensure public safety. During a later investigation, Martinez's weapon was in fact loaded. Both officers who discharged their weapons are a nine and thirteen year veteran of the force.
Despite being shot in the head, Martinez survived his injury, however detectives have not been able to speak with him due to his inpatient medical care at an area hospital. He does however still remain under police supervision.
