An incident that occurred on September 28th, 2021, left an armed robber dead after Anaheim SWAT returned fire during a four hour standoff.
The suspect, identified as Brandon Lopez, was shot and killed by SWAT officers after exiting a disabled stolen vehicle in Santa Ana. At around 5 p.m., Anaheim police officers engaged in a high speed chase with Lopez, however they were authorized to disengage due to his erratic driving.
Shortly after the chase was called off, area officers observed Lopez's vehicle, now disabled in a construction site near Santa Ana Boulevard and Bristol Street. As officers surrounded the vehicle, Lopez holed up inside and refused to comply with officers. Crisis negotiators and SWAT personnel arrived on the scene, where a four hour long standoff took place.
After negotiations failed, SWAT officers reverted to tear gas, which forced Lopez to exit the vehicle. At the time, Lopez was classified as armed and dangerous. Upon exiting the vehicle, Lopez attempted to run from police custody, where an officer involved shooting occurred. Lopez was pronounced deceased at the scene.
There is still an ongoing investigation being conducted by the Orange County Law Firm and the Orange County DA Office.
