Denver Police Department reported a critical incident which occurred on June 13th, 2021, after DPD officers responded to reports of a middle aged male subject firing shots into a vehicle located on East Colfax Avenue and Uinta Street, Denver, CO.
As responding officers arrived in the reported area, witnesses approached them and provided further information on the direction in which the suspect fled on foot. Shortly after patrolling the surrounding area, DPD officers located the male subject near Yosemite Street, where they approached him with service weapons drawn.
Upon exiting their cruiser, officers immediately spotted a weapon on the male subjects waistband, where they soon began giving commands to not reach. Regarding the officers safety, they continued to tell the male subject to not reach for it. In a mockery tone, the male subject responded, "did I reach for it?". Seconds later, the male subject throws an object from his right hand toward the street, then swiftly draws an item from his back pocket with his left. As he does so, DPD officers began firing multiple shots, neutralizing the threat.
Officers began to render aid, applying tourniquets and gauze until paramedics arrived to transport the suspect to a local medical facility. While arriving at the hospital, the 30-year-old male subject was identified as Duane Manzanares. Despite life-saving measures, Manzanares succumbed to his injuries.
