(NSFW) Cop's Low Ready Beats Suspect's Draw

This compilation of police dashcam and bodycam footage from Riverside, California, shows two officers at an apartment complex. They are conducting a vehicle check when a suspect's poor decisions escalate the event into an Officer Involved Shooting. Viewer's discretion is advised.

We first see the event from the cruiser's dashcam, which records the officers making initial contact with the suspect, 26-year-old Ryan Smith. Narration is provided by Riverside PD, which recounts the incident, including Smith taking his hand off his weapon before hastily returning it. This was perceived, with evident good reason, by the cover officer as an attempt to quick-draw the handgun. Naturally, this contest of speed was pretty well stacked against Smith, who was shot five times.

At 0:42, we see the cover officer's perspective and hear him repeatedly warn smith to remove his hand from the gun. At 01:01, Smith makes the reach and loses the gunfight. The car, in drive, rolls into the gate. Smith can be heard yelling as he rolls out of the open driver's side door.

At 01:39, we see the incident from the contact officer's point of view. Note that although the other officer ends up doing the shooting, he is considered the "cover" officer, as from his vantage point he sees Smith's handgun as the other officer makes initial contact. Hence, "cover officer" versus "contact officer." While the contact officer maintains radio discipline and reports the situation, the way he runs for cover with his back to his partner's gunfight, it could be argued, leaves some valor to be desired.

Despite aid rendered on-scene and en route to the local hospital, Smith died of his injuries.
