Just after 11:40 p.m. on August 15th, 2019, officers from the Denver Police Department located a black Jeep Patriot parked outback of the 7-Eleven near West Colfax Avenue and Perry Street, which days prior had been involved in an eluding incident.
As officers approached the male subject, he was immediately questioned and patted down for weapons. After locating a needle in the male subjects pocket, the responding officer began detaining the man. While the officer was preoccupied with the male subject, a female who was later identified as 31-year-old Jamie Fernandez, exited the front passenger seat of the vehicle and began fleeing the scene.
While Fernandez was running toward the alleyway nearby, a secondary officer had arrived on the scene. As Fernandez rounded the corner, heading down the alleyway, she drew a handgun and fired at both uniformed officers. In response, both officers fired multiple shots, striking her numerous times and fatally wounding her.
Fernandez received medical treatment from responding EMT'S until she was transported to Denver Health Medical Center. Despite live-saving measures, Fernandez succumbed to her injuries. The male counterpart was later identified as 31-year-old Justin Lucero, who was arrested on the scene for an outstanding DUI warrant.
