(NSFW) K-9 Shreds Suspects Arm After Slipping Out From Cruiser, Accidentally

On May 9, 2021 at 4:46 p.m., Kern County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and the K-9 Unit responded to a high-risk traffic stop on a reported stolen vehicle in the 5900 block of Wright Avenue, in which a KCSO K-9 was accidentally released from a patrol vehicle.

Upon arriving at the reported location, Deputies located the stolen white GMC pick-up truck, which was actively being occupied by the suspect. Along with the suspect, a group of by-standers surrounded the vehicle and appeared to be conversing with him. As deputies approached the stolen vehicle, weapons drawn, one by-stander was told to get on the ground.

With the suspect still positioned in the stolen vehicle, Deputies inform him he is surrounded and to continue showing his hands. As the lead deputy secures the perimeter, a secondary responding deputy opens up the rear door of the K-9 cruiser. Seconds after opening the door, the K-9 exits the vehicle and attacks the man lying face down in the dirt.

As the dog shreds the mans arm, Deputies begin scrambling to try and release the dogs latch. Within a few minutes, the dogs latch was released, and the K-9 was placed back into the cruiser. Clearly pissed off at the other deputy, he makes a comment "What the f*** man". What turned out to be an unfortunate event could have been much worse. Luckily, the suspect they originally responded to was not a threat and was not armed. During this vulnerable situation, these deputies could have been gunned down or seriously injured.
