A critical incident with the Los Angeles Police Department that occurred on April 9th, 2018, left one officer wounded and the suspect deceased.
At around 10:15 a.m., Topanga Division uniformed officers engaged in a high speed car chase with a brown, Ford Explorer, after it had been reportedly stolen. After a short car chase, the suspect, later identified as 29-year-old Daniel Joseph Carver, exited the SUV and began fleeing down an alleyway.
While officers pursued, they provided verbal commands to Carver to stop running. Additionally, officers threatened to utilize a taser and their service weapons after observing Carver reaching multiple times. As seen in the footage, the pursuing officers nearly closed the distance between themselves and Carver, however in a desperate, last ditch effort, Carver presented a revolver and fired multiple shots at them.
In return, LAPD officers returned fire, striking Carver multiple times, finally neutralizing him. Officers immediately removed the weapon from Carver's possession and began detaining him. During the engagement, one officer was struck in the left leg. He taken away by medical transport, where he was labeled in stable condition and sustained non-life threatening injuries. As for Carver, Los Angeles Fire Department arrived on the scene shortly after the incident occurred. Despite life-saving treatment, Carver succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene.
