Extremely graphic footage shows Ukrainian combat medics treating a seriously wounded soldier for injuries sustained in battle. Viewer discretion is advised.
The video begins as the wounded soldier is delivered to the aid station in the bed of a pickup. The soldier appears to be bleeding heavily from a wound on his upper arm. There is a bandage over the visible wound, but there is also a tourniquet incorrectly placed below the injury, likely by an undertrained but good intentioned fellow soldier.
The medics strip cloth away from the wound and begin packing it with gauze and then rewrap it with an Israeli bandage. After treating the wound they notice the patient is still losing a significant amount of blood and they rush to strip away more clothing, which they should have done much sooner.
As they cut his shirt from his body they find a second hole, which poses a much higher risk of death than the first injury. It is what is known as a junctional (armpit) wound, located neither in the extremity where a tourniquet could be used, nor is it in the torso where an occlusive chest seal and gauze packing would be as effective. The wounded man's best chance is to get him to a much higher level of care at an advanced trauma hospital, which is likely several hours away.
They stabilize him the best they can and cover him in a space blanket, as blood loss leads to lower body temps, which further inhibits the body's ability to clot blood. It's a vicious cycle that leads to rapid death if not treated.
An ambulance arrives and they send him on his way. They did all they can do to give him the best chance at survival. The fate of the wounded man is unknown.
