UPDATE: As of 4:50 CST, the casualty figure is up to 13 US service members killed, and an additional 15 wounded.
Multiple US service members were reportedly wounded and several Afghans killed in an apparent suicide bombing at one of the gates at Hamid Karzai International Airport (HKIA) in Kabul on Aug. 26, 2021.
The story is still breaking and much of the information coming out of Kabul is unconfirmed. The information we are receiving suggests multiple blasts have taken place. Reportedly, three of four US service members were killed or wounded in the incidents, but no official casualty has been released by the DOD.
Reports suggest "Abbey Gate" was targeted by one of the blasts. The gate was one of the main entrances being used to channel evacuees into the airport. A separate blast targeted the "Baron Hotel" near the airport. The day prior, the US Embassy Kabul released a warning US citizens to stay clear of the airport gates because of intelligence suggesting a suicide attack was imminent.
Unconfirmed footage and images coming out of the country are mixed with old media files of past incidents, making it hard to identify what is legitimate and what is misinformation. Keep that in mind as you view the accompanying video and any media coming supposedly documenting the incident. We cannot guarantee the authenticity of any of this imagery.
