(NSFW) That Escalated Quickly: Stolen Car, Gunfight & Hostage Rescue, Dallas PD

This compilation of agency-provided dash, body, and drone cam footage depicts Dallas PD engaging on suspicion of a stolen Cadillac SUV. The suspect instead elects to shoot and flee in a stolen vehicle. When the vehicle crashes, the gunfight resumes. The suspect is killed and a previously unknown hostage is found inside the wrecked vehicle. Viewer discretion is advised.

The suspect, later identified as 55-year-old Michael Shirley, is spotted at 0:12. At 0:17, instead of stopping as instructed, Shirley draws a handgun. whereupon he is fired upon by the officers on-scene. At 0:24, he fires at the officers before fleeing in a stolen Cadillac. It is important to note that unbeknownst to the officers at this time, there is a hostage handcuffed in the vehicle. The officers do not pursue, on the grounds that the road is a dead-end. However, Shirley evades their ad-hoc blockade by driving through an apartment complex, and the officers pursue at 01:36.

At 02:47, the officers find the stolen vehicle on its side. Undercover officers in the area report that Shirley struck a curb and crashed. Shirley is seen standing near the rear of the vehicle as the officers dismount. He fires twice at 02:56. There is a lull of almost 30 seconds before the officers return fire with AR-15s.

The POV shifts to Officer Vela at 03:47. We see the initial shootout from her perspective, including the volume of fire directed at the suspect and vehicle. Again, it's worth noting that there is a hostage inside- not that Vela had any way of knowing.

At 07:34, Officer Pease advances, AR-15 at high ready. He passes the rifle to another officer before readying another- "Jesus fuck, dude." Pease calls for Shirley to show his hands twice and to drop the gun before Shirley fires at 08:35, prompting Pease to open fire. He calls for EMS at 08:45, indicating that Shirley is down.

We see drone footage at 08:53. At 09:59, the drone switches to a thermal view. As the drone is used to look through the back glass of the wrecked vehicle, the hostage is seen waving at the drone. Her hands are visibly restrained above her head with handcuffs. She reportedly got in the vehicle voluntarily, but was not expecting to be handcuffed to it. At 10:56, the drone views Shirley, who was pronounced dead on-scene despite aid rendered. Although the depiction of Shirley is occluded, his weapon is visible on the ground beside him.
