Officer Smashes Gate To Rescue Person After Plummeting 40-Feet From Bridge

On October 21st, 2021, an officer from the Atlanta Police Department was dispatched to a single vehicle accident at around 0100 hours. During the dispatch call, limited information was provided regarding the crash, so the officer decided to go code 3 (lights and siren) to arrive on the scene in a timely manner.

As indicated by the footage, the officer arrived in the area, where a panicked man was out in the road waving down the police officer and an additional vehicle for assistance. The man informed the responding officer a man had crashed his vehicle on the bridge above, broke through the barrier, and plummeted 40-feet to the ground.

In response, the officer began speeding down the dirt path leading to the underside of the bridge. Unfortunately, a gate prevented the officer from maneuvering his police cruiser toward the wrecked car. Without hesitation, the officer immediately requested permission to ram the gate, as it was necessary to provide medical assistance to the trapped victim. With the approval of his request taking too long, the officer appears to take it upon himself to ram his vehicle through the gate.

After ramming the gate three times, the officer was finally successful in breaking through. As indicated by police and media reports, the officer was able to successfully remove the trapped victim from the vehicle and provide medical aid. The driver of the wrecked car was transported to an area hospital and was last known to be in stable condition.

This officers quick actions saved the drivers life that night. In my opinion, it's always better to ask for forgiveness than permission when it comes to incidents like this. The Atlanta Police Department later made a statement of how proud they were of this police officers efforts.
