"Osa" Air Defense System Smacks Russian Orlan-10 UAV

This footage, provided by the Ukrainian military, shows an “Osa” air defense system, which is highly mobile and intended for short-range intercepts, as it shoots down a Russian surveillance drone. This reportedly happened in the Kharkiv region.

The 9K33 “Osa” (NATO reporting name: SA-8 “Gecko”) is a venerable surface to air missile system from the Soviet era, first fielded in 1972. It holds the distinction of being the first air defense system to host both its launcher and radar elements in the same vehicle. Despite being potentially outpaced by newer platforms, the “Osa” has enjoyed considerable success in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict due to the proliferation of drones on the battlefield. Drones, such as the Orlan-10 being shot here, operate well within the speeds and altitudes at which the “Osa” can intercept.

Resembling nothing so much as a civilian RC plane, the Orlan-10 is a portable, catapult-launched surveillance drone used by Russian forces. It is made of a composite material which reduces its radar signature, which makes a hit from the outdated “Osa” radar suite all the more impressive. Although it is primarily used for intelligence gathering, Orlan-10s have been modified to carry explosives by the Russian military.
