This footage, taken by a soldier watching from the ground, depicts a pair of Ukrainian Mi-8 helicopters (NATO Designator: Hip) as they lob rockets in a pitch-up style that has become a staple of the air war in Ukraine.
The Mi-8 “Hip” is used as a multirole aircraft by both sides of the war, filling transport, attack, and reconnaissance roles. Outside of this specific conflict it is used in a military capacity by 50 countries and is one of the most common military aircraft in the world.
Note how as soon as the rockets are fired at 0:05, the pilot pops flares before pitching back down and as it banks away. While it is somewhat occluded by the smoke from the first aircraft’s flares, a second bird can be seen in the background conducting similar maneuvers. Staying low to the ground and only rising briefly, along with using flares while doing so, are defensive tactics to discourage enemy air defenses.
While both the Russians and the Ukrainians bombard their enemies with this technique, it is becoming an outright necessity for the Ukrainian pilots. The Ukrainian military branches possess a much smaller number of aircraft than their Russian counterparts, placing a premium on operational aircraft and keeping them flying.
