On 7/12/21 at approximately 1458 hours, Fontana Police Officers attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle. While attempting the stop, a passenger fled from the vehicle on foot, and the driver went into a pursuit with a female passenger still in the backseat.
The pursuit traveled Westbound on the IS10 freeway, exiting and getting back on several times. At one point, the suspect exited and got on the Eastbound IS10, where he exited at Milliken Ave. When the suspect got to the top of the off-ramp, he began to make a U-turn to get back on the freeway. Pursuit intervention techniques were then used, and the vehicle was boxed in by officers.
Despite the suspect's vehicle being surrounded by police vehicles, the suspect attempted to use the vehicle as a weapon. An officer-involved shooting then occurred where the suspect was struck by the gunfire, stopping the threat.
Lifesaving procedures were administered immediately by officers on the scene, including fully trained and equipped paramedic reserve Fontana Police Officers. Despite these lifesaving procedures, the male suspect, later identified as 22-year-old Larry Mendez, succumbed to his injuries. The female passenger in the vehicle was pulled to safety and was unharmed. No officers were injured in the incident.
