San Diego Deputy Passes Out While Inspecting Bags of Drugs

Edit: This article initially stated that the deputy was knocked out by a Fentanyl overdose, which is what was claimed in the initial police report. Further investigation has brought that theory into question, and it is currently unknown why the officer passed out.

On August 5, 2021, San Diego County Sheriff's Department released a public safety video related to the dangers of Fentanyl. While conducting an investigation on August 3, 2021, related to the arrest of Robert Smith, for commercial burglary, vandalism, and possession of dangerous narcotics, Deputy D Faiivae and Deputy Scott Crane located Smith's Jeep Wrangler and began searching it for additional evidence.

Upon searching the vehicle, the Deputies discovered a plastic bag containing a white powdery substance, which they then took back to their cruiser for a narcotics test. During the narcotic testing, the substance had tested positive for Fentanyl and Fluorofentanyl. While conducting the narcotic test, Deputy Crane warned Deputy Faiivae, "don't get that close man".

Seconds later, Deputy Crane's body worn camera captures Deputy Faiivae collapsing to the ground and smacking his head on the pavement. Already aware of what just happened, Deputy Crane entered the rear of the cruiser and retrieved Narcan and began administering two 4mg doses into Deputy Faiivae's nostrils.

Paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after and transported Deputy Faiivae to Palomar Medical Center with Deputy Crane riding with them. If it wasn't for the immediate action taken by Deputy Crane, Deputy Faiivae would have lost his life due to an accidental overdose.
