Two NYPD officers were wounded after they were ambushed in a stairwell while responding to a call at a Brooklyn apartment building on Mar. 7, 2021.
Officers of the 71st Precinct were responding to a 911 call in which a man claimed he was shot by his roommate and was hiding in his closet. As the officers climbed the stairs to the scene, the suspect, Ridhwaan Abdur Rashid, 44, opened the door, using a blanket to obscure his revolver. He then pointed the gun at the police, who gave him several commands to drop the weapon. Rashid ignored the commands and then fired at least twice at the officers. The officers fired back as Rashid retreated back into his apartment.
After a brief standoff, Rashid was taken into custody unharmed. His roommate had gunshot wounds to both legs from Rashid, but will survive. Two of the officers were wounded. One was hit in his armored vest and the other sustained a grazing wound to the leg. Both officers' injuries are described as minor.
Rashid's charges include attempted murder of a police officer, attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and unlawful imprisonment.
