Taliban fighters record themselves interacting with Iranian military personnel after capturing the Afghanistan-Iranian border checkpoint from the ANA.
Many of the Afghanistan National Army troops reportedly fled across the Islam Qala border crossing in Herat province, seeking safety in Iran. Some reports have indicated that the Iranian government will be flying the ANA officers back into Kabul. Afghan officials claimed a counterassault to retake the border crossing is imminent.
Taliban forces have made rapid gains in the last week and have captured districts that border Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, China, and Pakistan. There is now a battle being waged for the northern Balkh province, which borders Uzbekistan. The Taliban reportedly hold over 200 districts across 34 provinces, accounting for over half the country. However, many of the major cities and urban areas are still under government control, for now.
