This footage shows missiles striking Israel, having been fired from Iran. This attack was part of the reprisal against Israel’s recent attack on Iran’s embassy in Syria.
While these are reportedly the first missiles to land in Israel, they are almost certainly not among the first missiles or drones launched. The United States and allies actively participated in shooting down elements of the Iranian attack. This, along with the Iron Dome and Arrow (Hetz) system, meant that of 300+ missiles, a grand total of seven reportedly made it through, equating to a 2.1 percent success rate.
Given the known efficiency of the air defense systems of Israel and its allies, and the relatively early disclosure of the attack, and the flight time before the missiles and drones would arrive, it’s likely that this attack was a measure by Iran to effectively “save face”, as their government could not be seen to do nothing in the wake of Israel’s strike in Syria. After their largely ineffective reprisal, Iran effectively communicated to the United Nations that they consider the matter closed. This is similar to Iran’s “Operation Martyr Solemani” against the US-held Al-Asad AIrbase in Iraq, January 2020.
