A turret gunner in Afghanistan records his point-of-view as his vehicle runs over a massive improvised explosive device. If you've ever wondered what it looks like, now you know.
For those of you who have been fortunate enough to have never been inside of the turret of an armored vehicle when it hits an IED, here's a video to give you some perspective. The next 3 to 5 minutes of this guy's life were probably spent getting dirt and rocks out of his mouth and eyes. According to the guy who recorded this, the IED was between 50 and 60 pounds of homemade explosives. He didn't mention his unit, or the area of operations that this was filmed in.
If you watch closely enough, you can actually spot the IED before they hit it. Unfortunately, there's a lot of things in Afghanistan and Iraq that look exactly like the IED in this video. If you stopped at every single one of them, well, most of us would still be out on patrol in Afghanistan right now trying to get back inside the wire.
