Ukraine’s “Steppe Wolves Company” Sends The Hurt Via Technical

This footage, provided by drone pilots in the Steppe Wolves Company, shows an artillery crew from their unit using a Grad rocket launcher on a civilian platform- a configuration known as a “technical.” They use it to fire 122-millimeter rockets at Russian positions.

We’ve covered technicals fairly extensively on Funker530, from pickup-mounted Grad launchers like this one to this destruction derby fever dream. They’re unilaterally rad, and I will not elaborate further here.

However, what does deserve special mention here is the Steppe Wolves Company itself. It is entirely volunteer, with no official support from the Ukrainian military. This is because it is made up of Ukrainians who were deemed too old or infirm for military service. They got together and decided to do it any-damn-way, support or not. Imagine getting kicked out of MEPS and deciding, a la Bender “Bending” Rodriguez: “Screw it, we’ll make our own army, with blackjack and hookers!”

While they occasionally are donated supplies, their chief mode of supply is scavenging and re-fitting duds or failed rockets, which is as dangerous as it sounds- especially for civilians working with ersatz tools and scant official training. That’s right- the Steppe Wolves refuse to be second-stringers, to the point that they risk their lives to risk their lives for their country. It speaks volumes about the attitude of resistance toward Russian incursions in Ukraine.
