Ukrainian Drone Pilot Explores Low-Tech Countermeasures

This footage, from the perspective of a Ukrainian drone, shows the remotely controlled vehicle interdicting and taking out a Russian drone with a decidedly low-tech weapon: a stick.

Definitely not referred to as a Strategic Technical Interdiction Contact Kit (STICK), the Ukrainian pilot effectively uses it like a lance or spear, descending on his Russian counterpart from above and disabling his drone. While humorous, it’s also effective.

Furthermore, this use of low-tech provides commentary on Ukraine’s ongoing ability to adapt the bare minimum. While aid packages from other countries have definitely made a substantive difference in Ukraine’s ability to fight the war, in order to prosecute a more protracted, ongoing conflict, Ukraine must be able to function as cost-effectively and autonomously as possible, as such packages are not guaranteed. Lancing drones with sticks is probably an example en extremis, but it illustrates the point.

Or, hear me out: they got bored and had a stick.
