A Ukrainian soldier fires a Javelin anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) from inside a shattered building, striking an unseen target. One of the Javelin’s features is a soft-launch capability, allowing it to be fired from inside a structure or bunker. Previous generations of ATGM, such as the Dragon or a TOW mounted on a tripod would require plenty of clearance for the backblast, the hot flame and gasses expelled from the rear of the missile, and firing either of those systems inside an enclosed space could seriously injure the crew. The Javelin launches the missile up and away from the gunner before the flight motor engages, eliminating that risk to the crew.
