This footage depicts two Ukrainian MI-8 helicopters coming in extremely low before pitching up their noses to fire a salvo of rockets, which then arc to land on their target area.
The pitch-up technique being employed here is a common tactic used by both sides in this conflict. While it is inherently inaccurate, it compensates for this by increasing the rockets’ range and protecting the helicopter from air defenses. The penalty to accuracy may be overcome if smarter munitions are used, but even with “dumb” rockets, the MI-8’s (NATO designation “Hip”) ability to deliver in a large area, re-arm and return quickly mean that pitch-up attacks have their value.
The MI-8 was introduced in 1968 by the Soviet Air Force, and has since been used by approximately 80 countries.
