Ukrainian Special Operations Unit Strikes Russian Base in Syria

Footage released by a Ukrainian news agency shows an alleged strike against a Russian airbase located in Syria. According to the source of the footage, the attack was conducted by a special operations unit within the Ukrainian Main Directorate of Intelligence, or the GUR for short.
The objective of this type of power projection is to impact and attrite Russia's military apparatus on a global scale in order to effectively blunt Russian front-line operations inside of Ukraine. While this may seem counter-intuitive to deploying these special operations troops in Ukraine where they can directly impact the fight inside of their own country, the objective is to force Russia to deploy and invest additional assets in other foreign conflicts. This action, combined with Special Operations troops hitting soft targets in other areas, pulls military assets and manpower from the Ukrainian front-lines.
