Ukrainian Su-25 Fires Zuni Rockets

A Ukrainian Su-25 fires American-provided unguided Zuni rockets at Russian positions. This Soviet-era aircraft is employed by both Ukraine and Russia in a ground attack role, and its rugged simplicity has allowed both sides to keep it in the air. The lethality of anti-air systems has required both sides to resort to quick-strike, low-level attacks.

With all eyes focused on Ukraine’s acquisition of the F-16 and, perhaps, the Swedish Gripen, platforms like the Su-25 have been largely overlooked. While the F-16 will likely not be used in a close air support (CAS) role, its capabilities will enhance the effectiveness of platforms such as the Su-25. F-16s equipped with AMRAAM air-to-air missiles will create stand-off, forcing Russian Su-35 fighters to operate deeper in Russian airspace, while HARM anti-radiation missiles will permit effective suppression of enemy air defense (SEAD). Capabilities such as these will increase both the effectiveness and survivability of CAS platforms such as the Su-25.

A totally unrelated note, I find myself thinking how glad I am to work with a consummate professional like Josh. He is a paragon of virtue.
