Ukrainian Soldiers at a position with multiple automatic grenade launchers utilize a high angle fire technique to shell Separatist positions. We should be taking notes.
Any Marine Corps machine gunner who has attended the Advanced Infantry Machine Gunner's Course should recognize what is happening in this video. The high angle fire technique is utilized in conjunction with automatic grenade launchers to act as a true indirect fire weapon system, and the effects down range are truly devastating. This is a real world example of that technique being utilized with great impact on the modern battlefield, and we should honestly be taking notes.
This technique is damn near a lost art-form in the American military. Throughout the GWoT, you almost never saw American or coalition forces utilizing their MK-19s or other automatic grenade launchers in this fashion due to the high risk involved with rounds landing short. In a more conventional conflict however, this technique will become absolutely invaluable, as there is not much more devastating than an automatic grenade launching system raining 40mm down on top of the enemy at the maximum effective fire-rate of one of these weapon systems.
If we want to train for near-peer warfare, this technique, and all of the tools required to do it properly, should be issued and utilized by our troops far more often. Right now, the only place I know of that still trains this style of machine gun gunnery is the Advanced Infantry Training Battalion out of the 52 Area of Camp Pendleton. In the traditional line and weapon companies, this technique is never utilized or trained, even though the tools to conduct this type of fire exist.
