Footage from the very beginning of the Syrian Civil War captures unarmed rebel fighters taunting troops from the Syrian Arab Army. This is a reminder of how the conflict started.
Having followed this conflict since nearly the beginning, it's incredibly easy to forget how it all started. Over the years, the Free Syrian Army has been taken over by Islamic Extremists who have warped the ideology of the group into something that is nearly unrecognizable. At the beginning of the Syrian Civil War, the Free Syrian Army was made up dominantly of defected Soldiers and Police Officers who wanted to get the entire country out from underneath the rule of their tyrannical dictator, Bashir al-Assad. Today, they're a shadow of that image, and comprised mostly of radical extremists who care less about democratic elections, and more about their ability to exert religious control on others.
This video, which was recorded back in 2011, is a throwback to that time when the Syrian Civil War was not even officially declared a Civil War. In it, you can see unarmed members of the rebel faction taunting Syrian Arab Army troops who are shooting at them. It's a reminder of how things started in Syria, even though we're nowhere near this now over a decade later.
