US AH-64 Apaches Respond To ISIS Prison Break In Syria

Islamic State launched it's largest attack in Syria in three years on Jan. 20, 2022 as they assaulted a Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) controlled prison in the town of Geweran in Hasakah province with the intention of freeing ISIS inmates.

At least 23 Kurdish security forces were killed during the siege on the prison. At one point the inmates were able to take total control of the prison and dozens of IS-linked prisoners reportedly escaped.

Various witness clips of the incident show US forces responding to the attack, including an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. Another clip appears to show the ISIS fighters storming the prison during hours of limited visibility.

IS initiated the attack with a car bomb. At least 40 ISIS fighters were killed in the battle. US and Kurdish forces have reportedly stopped the assault and several prisoners were recaptured.
