Why did NATO make a version of the PKM machine gun?

When Poland joined NATO they weren't ready to say good bye to their PKM. Instead of switching to the M240 they made their own version of the PKM that could fire the NATO 7.62 x 51mm belt fed ammo. That sounds easy but it actually took a ton of engineering and re tooling.
